FI DDLING WITH INSULIN

Aus Al-Zaid, Saudi Arabia

Type 2 diabetes mellitus is exceedingly common in Saudi Arabia. While generally considered a disease of middle-aged and elderly people, we have however, recently observed an increasing number of local young people with hyperglycemia and a clinical picture consistent with type 2 diabetes. In the proposed presentation, we report on a series of young type 2 diabetic patients, highlight the distinguishing clinical and laboratory features and debate the place of insulin therapy in the treatment of such patients. More disturbingly however, if these observations are confirmed elsewhere in the Arab world, it may indicate a serious development in the natural history of diabetes amongst Arabs and mark a new and sinister twist in the on-going fight against diabetes in the Arab world.
