Abstract:

To examine the prevalence of celiac disease (CD) in young patients with Type diabetes in
Saudi Arabia, serum gliadin IgA and reticulin IgA antibody determination were performed in al1123 patients with insulin dependent diabetes mellitus attending the children's diabetes clinic at King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center Elevated gliadin IgA levels were found in sera of ten (8.1 %) of 123 diabetic children none had any gastrointestinal symptoms. Six of the ten subjects had jejun biopsies, which showed total villous atrophy in all cases. The gender ratio was males. 1 female. All patients who were gliadin IgA positive were prescribed gluten-free diet and all normalized their gliadin IgA levels within a few months. Th maximum prevalence CD in our population was 8.1 %, based on immunology markers and the minimum prevalence 4.9% based on antibody and biopsy results.
